Taxes are not only eternal but as varied as human activities.
Just as "Government" is not monolithic, taxes are not either. We have Government on so many different levels: Federal, State, City, County, and Special Districts. Each of those governments can pass and impose so many different taxes. American Citizens face the following taxes:
Income Taxes
Property Taxes
Sales Taxes
Gas Taxes
Automobile Registration Taxes
Social Security Taxes
Medicare Taxes
Shared Responsibility Payments (under Obamacare)
Estate Taxes
Food Taxes
Luxury Taxes on liqueur, cigarettes and candy.
Hotel Room Tax
Head Tax (for example if you work in Denver you pay about $3.25 per paycheck)
License Fees - dogs, hunting, fishing, etc.
Unemployment Taxes
Telephone Taxes - (pay for Universal Access and 911 calls)
Permits for Building remodels, constructions.
Tariffs
Victim Assistance Fund - an additional surcharge on traffic tickets
Toll Roads
Airline 911 Security Fee
Environmental Fees - when you discard tires, and change your oil.
Renewable Energy Fees on Electric Bills.
When discussing taxes, you should understand that they come in almost mind-numbing different sizes, labels and forms - but the end result is the same: taxes are an additional burden upon the purchasing power of the people. Whether the claimed benefits of the government programs funded are worth the burden they impose is the real question.
